- Sandberg broke into the big leagues on September 2nd, 1981, with the Philadelphia Phillies. He would only play 13 games for the club however as he was traded along with Larry Bowa to the Chicago Cubs for shortstop Iván DeJesús prior to the 1982 season. The trade is now widely regarded as one of the most lopsided deals in baseball history, coming about after negotiations between Bowa and the Phillies broke down over a new contract. Ryne Sandberg, the young Philly shortstop, now a Cub, would be moved to second base and the rest is Hall of Fame history. Sandberg would play the rest of his career as a Chicago Cub before retiring after the 1997 season, ending a 16 year career in the MLB.
